Bad dialog is something that can bog down writing.

EXAMPLE:

Direct Quotes:

1. The chef said, "He likes to cook."
2. "The fire started in your trash can." said the firefighter.

Indirect Quotes:

1. The grocer said that they are out of tomatoes.
The key word here is "that."
